Read on a thread in discussion protests about X Y Z being victims of 'cyberbullying' . Does it exist. Or is it due to a case of 'misunderstanding' . 'Gang mentality' or just a case of one man' meat is anothers poison' and all that.

Yes it exists although the bullies often ridicule the suggestion because if they were outed they would have no one to play with...

Quoting TisMe (09/02/2012 @ 19:38:11): Cobblers, in the world of the grown up, it cannot exist.. . Of course it can...It happens to adults in real life too...Not everyone is made the same; not everyone can detach...not everyone sees online interactions as nothing.....people allow themselves to be bullied all the time but it probably requires empathy to recognise it...and many onliners don't allow themselves to feel anything towards other cyber personalities... It doesn't mean there aren't hearts behind those avatars...and not all folk work on cold logic... |

Tisme, is not the pen or in this case 'keyboard' mightier than the sword. Thus surely implying, words can damage and hurt even in written form, Don't think Edward Bulwer-Lytton in his play Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy, (1839)only had children in mind.

As outsiders can we objectively say that particular cyber behaviour is bullying? Perhaps only the bullied can know (or feel) it's happening.

Panorama on Monday was devoted to cyber bullying. It was quite an eye-opener. It has resulted in more than one suicide by youngsters who can't handle it.
There's also a little "bullying" on SZ but we are subject to scrutiny by the SZ host. It's easy to say, "Don't accept as friends on facebook people you don't know." but youngsters have a different view of the world. |

I am a thick skinned Paddy I would not be bullied however some people are vulnerable to these people and their actions. We are all different I only thank God that I have a stronger moral character than these people who prey on the vulnerable .I dare say they are pathetic individual in the real world that's why they hide in the cyber world.

I let myself be put down to easy hate confrontation fear the backlash if I speak out , my upbring may be to blame but I am working on it ,even at this late stage in life ,I do feel at times unable to deal with folk who do try to intimidate me at work mostly but I am now speaking out more so never to late to grow a back bone.
On here I am just walking away if I am uncomfortable with any thing dont need the grief . |

Of course it exists, and can and does cause untold misery to people for whom the Cyber world is their only window on the outside world.
I've watched it on many occasions on different fora, it's nasty, and insidious . Dippy I do the same as you, I walk away from anything that makes me feel uncomfortable, but people often mistake 'niceness' for weakness, in my case at least, they couldn't be more wrong. |

Quoting Griffon (09/02/2012 @ 19:48:37): As outsiders can we objectively say that particular cyber behaviour is bullying? Perhaps only the bullied can know (or feel) it's happening. Maybe that is sometimes true. I know that on these threads, I see some people screaming that they are being bullied, when actually someone simply has a different attitude / point of view / experience of life, and says so - challenging others to give their reasons for their way of thinking / posts / attitude etc. I see more instances of people screaming that they are being bullied, than I see nastiness towards them (I still don't see how anyone can be 'bullied' by a keyboard!) I also see that it is the same few who constantly think they are being 'bullied' - I think it is more to do with someone who cannot see that others SO have simply a differing viewpoint, - maybe never went to a school where 'debate' was a regular feature of English - and you were TOLD which side of an argument you were going to represent - not necessarily your own! - and on one or two occasions, halfway through we had to 'change sides' and argue against the same person - who had also had to change sides - which meant our own arguments were used against us - a very very useful tool in seeing the stupidity / baselessness / lunacy of some point we had made earlier, thinking it was 'the winning point'. I disagree with a lot of posts and say so - and people disagree with a lot of my posts - and say so - that's the whole idea isn't it/ Certainly no one has ever tried to bully me1 Imagine it: I've often said I am so grateful for my Grammar School education. Others think I'm very wrong. - I might be right - they might be right. - So what - we exchange ideas - I think I've learnt something that I've not thought of before, along the way. How would someone even attempt to 'bully me'? "Say you are in favour of Grammar Schools again - and I'll say you are stupid! I'll call you silly names! I'll 'get you' on another thread!" What else can they do / say? - Throw a brick outwards through the computer screen? I think a lot is in the mind of those who think 'disagreeing' with someone is 'bullying them'. |
