I have booked a short break -- five days ---- with National Holidays to the ' Lake District ' area for our early holiday. National Holidays is a cheap and cheerful holiday company which we have used on many occasions before, so need I say more.
The holiday includes a visit to a few local towns, a trip on a preserved railway, and a boat ride on one of the lakes, it sounds so interesting.

In late May early June I am thinking of going to Shrewsbury for a holiday, there appears to be a very lot going on that area. I am planning to stop on a farm about five miles from Shrewsbury, I like farm stays, they are most friendly and obliging.

What are you doing, or are planning to do,
Do tell us.

Since I stopped working holidays have become less important to me. I rarely holidayed abroad anyway, and the type of UK holiday I do enjoy I can decide to go, and from making that initial decision to locking my front door behind me can take less than an hour. That's what I enjoy, the spontainaity (can't spell that!). I can't stand being organised. I have my accomodation on my back and the world is my oyster.

OK, I accept it is not everyone's cup of tea, but whatever rocks your boat I just wish you happy holidays.

Edit: Poor grammer slightly improved!

I have three weekend holidays planned in Suffolk, Ironbridge and the Lake District, and I'm also definitely going to visit Dublin this year.

The first is a Salsa weekend, the others are more activity weekends and sightseeing.

Nothing defenite planned yet - but some time in the lake district and touring in Norfok/Suffolk are on the cards. I've not been to the lakes for around ten years (had some walking holidays there in the past) so a return visit is well overdue. Same goes for Norfolk/Suffolk .. enjoyed visiting there a few years ago and feels like its time to return and seek out old haunts.

I've got two weekends planned in April, one in Berkshire and the other South Oxfordshire. Thinking of trying the Isle of Wight for a summer holiday as I've never been before. Won't be going to Europe this year as it will be too expensive. There are some wonderful places in the UK and I would like to visit them all.

It is good to see that some people are interested in holidays in the UK & ROI.

To Salsa Girl,
If you go to Ironbridge you need more than a weekend, the bridge is a magnificent site but a visit to Blists Hill ( spelling probably wrong) a open air museum, is very much worth a visit but it is a full day visit, the tile museum in the valley is a exiting place to visit with lots to see. If you go to Dublin even on a short trip you need one day to find your way round and then at least two more to see the popular sites, but go and enjoy the experience, but beware of Molly Malone, she has a very low cut dress.

I was in Norfolk just a couple of years ago, we stopped in a little B&B in a village called ' Little Snoring', we just went for a week but could have done with a month.

Keep the holidays rolling and enjoy them.

Thank you for the advice Archie, but I'm not sure I'll have time as I am going canoeing and pony trekking in Bridgnorth.

The Isle of Wight is a most wonderful place to visit; even in the height of summer there's always somewhere quiet to find for yourself and it's a really great place. Try it and enjoy.

That sounds quite interesting Woottonman, never been there myself but perhaps one day. Will you have time to visit Tintangel Castle or Boscastle, Bude is a nice place but I did not like Newquay, ( but that possibly was a personal thing, as everyone has different tastes).
So you will be looking forward to June.

The Saga University holidays are a very good way of seeing new places in this country as are
some of the themed holidays. They are usually five to seven days with some guided tours
but plenty of time for personal exploration. I have been to Portsmouth (as an ex wren pure nostalgia), Reaseheath College in order to visit Chester, Oxford which was an Art Appreciation week covering some marvellous country houses as well as the galleries, Canterbury.
This year it will be Liverpool.

I feel Boscastle is an absolute 'must' if you're in that neck of the woods - well worth a visit. Agree with you on Newquay Archie, town itself is ok, just too too many youths around the place chasing the surf, the drugs and the sex. Wore me out....
If you intend eating in any of Rick Stein's establishments whilst in Padstow don't forget your credit card....

I have just spent the last few days and many many hours on the net trying to book short 5-7 day
holidays by coach in uk,wales, scotland, but keep coming up with the same problem with NO single rooms available, although have got 1 to I.O.W. and one to Southport, must admit I have not tried
Nationial Holidays Archie, but dont hold out much hope for any succsess.
By the way I got a DVD to-day from SAGA of their Malta new Hotel the Coastline, they must be desperate to sell rooms there,I would not go to Malta again if they paid me.
Keep smiling folks

Have just tried National Holidays and they are useless for me as they only do holidays for the
North, their home page told me to click on my departure area, which was not on the map, wonderful !.
How hard can it be to get what one wants ??????????????????????????????.

Like to hear about inexpensive uk holidays, similar to youth hostel or ramblers holidays - I think Im too old to go on youth hostel hols. Not got a car now, so travel has to be bus, coach or train. I'm not in the North so wont try National Holidays.

I would like to spend a few days in an interesting destination and have just acquired a Shearings brochure. The momory of a disastrous holiday with them in Andelusia has faded and i'm willing togive them another try. The advantage for me is that one of their-pick-up points is only 200 yards from my home. That therefore meets my holiday requirement of minimum hassle. The other is maximum comfort, but I may need to make some compromises on that score with a coach holiday. My preference would be to throw everything that I need, golf clubs, etc, into my car and drive to where I have decided to go. Although I have more than fifty years of driving experience I have to admit that the amount of traffic and hold ups on the motorways represents a distinct deterrant these days. It is also rather a lonely business travelling about on one's own.

For those who haven't heard of it, the Manor House Hotel and Ashley Hotel near Okehampton provide really good venues for holidays. Every sport is catered for (4 golf courses), there is a craft centre, entertainment in the evenings and the food is excellent. They cater for three or four night holidays.

For those going on a motoring holiday in Scotland, I can strongly recommend a self-catering establishment called Morton of Pitmilly which is in Kingsbarns, just seven miles from St Andrews.
Telephone 01334 880466. The only problem is that you have to book early.

We set off tomorrow for our first little holiday of the year, on the cheap and cheerfull National Holidays trip. We are, according to a weather forcast, expecting rain, but that is sometimes a asset to a British holiday, and the destination, as I have mentioned before, the Lake District. I will let all know of the experience when we return, and perhaps some photograps in the gallery.

Myview, I for one have never heard of the Manor House Hotel, is it important???, or am I missing something.
