The UK Olympics .. what is your opinion?

I was asked what I of thought of the Olympic Games being held here this year by a SZ member.
Now, I am long in the tooth (watch out Methuselah), but as sharp as a button.
I can remember the last games held here (1948). I lived in a tenement block (Ruskin Buildings, Millbank) which was a stones throw from Big Ben and within spitting distance of the Tate (the original .. I could see it from my bedroom window). We still had rationing and I had never eaten a banana.
Times were austere compared to today’s easy living.
Imagine .. No TV , no central heating, no telephone, no instant hot water but we were all healthily slim (no fast food .. Our stomachs were healthily small) but it was SO cold in the winter.
I remember seeing lots of men wearing blazers. In those days the athletes were amateurs and NO ONE took drugs.
How times have changed. The very first games (held in Greece) had only one event. A short sprint over a stade (an ancient Greek unit of length) from where we get the word Stadium.
Sport is now a business. There is no such think as an amateur. It is about winning and the money that rolls in if you do.
I HATE competitions. I feel for the losers. I do not watch football or cricket. I do watch snooker on TV but even then feel sorry for the losers. One hero in a particular sport might hold the crown for a period but eventually he will lose it. It is all pointless vanity.
I do not look up to and admire those hero’s.
Sport is big business and the Olympics is the most expensive form of staging it.
What are those gold plated medals really worth. Admiration and glory for being able to run/jump/swim faster than anyone else.
We even admire animals that are faster than others.
Now I understand if you get pleasure from any of the previous. I do not begrudge you your pleasure but it is not for me. Winning for the contestants and those who watch them becomes an addiction.
Now let me deviate for a moment.
I read a article in Wednesdays Independent (i).
I will paraphrase ..
Around four and a half million elderly people in Britain are “making do” and going without the most basic household goods in order to pay rent and fuel bills, according to a charity survey.
.......................................
That is shameful and disgusting. I have heard it said many times that a society should be judged on how it treats its elderly members.
Does our millionaire PM and his millionaire DPM lose sleep over these real people?
Now back to the Olympics.
The cost of this years Olympic games is already over 12 billion pounds (£12,000,000,000). I am sceptical that they will get it back from the visitors that come here to watch events.
I see London grinding to a halt. I see marvellous opportunities for criminals. I see a wonderful opportunity for the terrorists and fellow travellers. I see opportunities for exploitation by hotels and other people who provide services. I see a dramatic escalation of the cost of living.
We are cutting back on our armed forces (they are treated so indifferently). We are cutting back on our police force.
We are cutting back on many other things (we have to).
I am not saying that we should not try to balance our books.
I am saying that to hold the 2012 games in the UK is to my mind an act of stupidity.
It will probably finally cost 15 billion pounds (£15,000,000,000) and for what?
Vanity and disruption.
Those four and a half million elderly people will not gain a penny and probably do not care about the games.
.................................
If you love and like to watch we could have done so from our homes watching another country staging the games.
Realistically, the only country that can afford to stage them is China.
I suggest that China alone should stage them every four years from now on .
………………………………..........................
I truly think that to stage the games here this year was a monumental idiot decision made by self interested people who are xxxxxxx.
.................................
The original games were held in the honour of the god Zeus (L. Jupiter).
In which God should our current games be held in the honour of?
Jehovah, Allah or Commercialism?
................................
I do hope you all join in with your comments for and against.

Robert - well done for hitting the nail on the head once more. I note that people who work in central London have been advised that they will not be able to travel home at the usual time and will have to leave work later or, as has been stated, could take their holidays then! The colossal waste of money is beyond belief imo. I couldn't believe just how very much money os being squandered on the opening ceremony! Why?

I too think that the Olympics will not benefit most of the country, and I think that "liking to watch it" is not a good reason to spend all those billions, we could watch it on TV if it were held in another country, and those with "a bob or two" could travel to see it wherever it was held. Our service men are being made redundant, they cannot get all the medical treatment they need, we have thousands of youngsters without jobs and hospitals are cutting back on staff and facilities, surely there are better things to spend money on than 2 weeks athletics.

Maybe this is just my selfish stance on the Olympics but not holding them in the UK wouldn't have made any difference to my life so why not hold them here? If they had been held elsewhere:
    I wouldn't get paid more
    I wouldn't get taxed less
My weekly shop would still keep increasing
    Petrol wouldn't go down
I can still go on holiday twice a year

And i feel that this is the case for a lot of people. Life goes on. I recently returned from a Saga holiday in Sri Lanka and all of my travelling companions didn't seem to be short of a bob or two.

With regard to the recent Jospeh Rowntree Trust report i think that if you read it throughly there is the following paragraph
"The fall in pensioner poverty over the last decade and more has been substantial. The rate is now around half what it was in the 1990s. Previously more likely than other adults, pensioners are now less likely to be in poverty". There are a lot of people 'making do' not just pensioners but it is not the fault of the games. The issue goes much deeper than this.

The main bulk of money recouped will not be from attendace it will be from the sale of the venues and village accomodation. I have a freind who lives opposite the site and bought her flat two years ago. The value of her flat has almost doubled as the regeneration continues. As it is a stones throw from Canary Wharf and the City these flats will be snapped up by property developers as buy to lets or become very convenient accommodation for people who work in the vicinity. Not to mention the business premises that will become available. About £1 billion came from BIG so more fool all those who squander there limited cash on tickets every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday contributing to yet another stealth tax in their avericious desire to become a multi millionaires.

Just a passing thought.... If we were not hosting the games, would the millions it cost go to the poor elderly? I doubt it very much.....

The whole thing is grotesque. Other than Weymouth floating the boats, London will be the only beneficiary, the rest of us have lost our art funding and much more.
Today I heard that private funds have been raised to allow relatives of wounded soldiers to be with their loved ones during long hospital treatments, (disgusting.) Mr Blair should be made to pay, he has made millions by joining in a war that should never have occured.
I was told by a London taxi driver that because of the fleet of luxury limousines bought to ferry officials they will lose out, plus the hideous jams that will be inevitable has made many of them plan to take a holiday during the gold-plated event.
With all the unrest in the world total security will be impossible but of course when it's all over and we are left with a lifetime's repayment, politicians and smug faces we see on television will all say,'Not my fault guv.'
Remember the Dome and that debt for WW2 that we have only recently paid off. Jack you're right, we are all mugs.

These games will now cost us 34 billions, or so it is estimated. 34 billions for a fortnights athletics meeting! Ye Gods, we must be collectively mad. Why don't they permanently site the games in the country where it all started...Greece. After all, they have the stadiums, having recently held the games there....and they could sure do with the tourism, and the money the games attract!

Paris had a lucky escape, IMO.
