Some time between Christmas and New Year I had a telephone consultation with one of my doctors. This would normally be a really great help as I don't have to leave the house and I am there in the comfort of my own home so to speak. On this occasion as we were chatting away I realised that I was on speaker phone at her end and the doctor was working away while she was chatting to me. Her voice would get fainter as she turned away from the phone and I could hear her looking through papers while I had my consultation, how rude and I got fobbed off with the old 'keep taking the painkillers'. So, when I went for the prescription on Monday I made an appointment to see a doctor, any doctor would do. The appointment was for 8.50am today in my branch of Boots, marvellous. The doctor was running late because of the traffic, so I got in to see her at 9.15. I was ready with the list if 'I can'ts' and I started to say I've come for a whinge, because of the cold I'm having alot of pain in my leg and she was nodding along with me and mentioned looking at my x-ray. I've never had one I said, that's ok go along and have one now, she said. Now? yes. So I had a coffee with son no3 and at 11.30am I was having an x-ray of my knee at Calderdale Royal Hospital. Now I have to wait 7-10 working days and then make an appointment with my doctor to discuss the results. I have to say that this bit of the NHS was great, I know that everyone has a tale to tell about it and this is mine, next time may not be so good but on this occasion I have to say how pleased I was with it and how nice everyone was.

I have a freind who lives in Wakefield and she has to wait to ring for an x-ray after seeing her doc, this just seems really great that my doc presses a button and hey-ho off i go. Don't worry Anne I am not silent if I think it's called for. Kay x

A few years ago I was sent to the orthopaedic dept of the hospital regarding my back (this after 2 operations that had not sorted it out) I had got my appointment within the guide line time - so far so good- they then referred me to the pain clinic and I was to find out later that when you are referred from one dept to another there are NO guide line times and after waiting 10 months I rang up and was told that the waiting list was so long I may never get to the top.
I then wrote to my MP regarding this as I thought it was a back door way of getting around the guide times, funnily enough within 3 weeks I had got to the top of the list.
The moral of this story is if it isn't working for you complain sometimes it is the only way to be heard. Glad that it worked for you though and hope the results are OK

I agree Dave the NHS do pull it out of the bag when it's necessary...

Sometimes patients are not very good... (I'm one of them) and my doctor is very patient with me......

Hope the results work out well for you.

Nice to hear how at least some parts of the health service seems to be working Kay. Whilst everything may not be rosy in the garden, we have a lot to be thankful for with our health service, the professionals that are in it and the carers that do the work. Kudos to those goodly people.
    Dave.
